PPL Enhances Hydrocarbon Production at Sui Gas Field with Compressor Upgrade

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), a leading oil and gas exploration company, has reported a significant increase in gas production at the Sui Gas Field following the successful revamping of its SML Compressors.

In a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Tuesday, PPL highlighted its ongoing commitment to strengthening Pakistan’s energy sector by maximizing domestic hydrocarbon output.

The company explained that, with many of its gas fields aging and experiencing natural decline, it identified a production enhancement opportunity at the Sui Gas Field through the revamping of SML Compressors. This upgrade has resulted in a substantial production increase of 19 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD).

Located in Dera Bugti, Balochistan, the Sui Gas Field is PPL’s flagship operation, housing the country’s largest gas compressor station and a purification plant. Despite its declining reserves, Sui remains one of Pakistan’s largest natural gas producers, contributing around 359 MMSCFD to the national grid.

The compressor revamping project began in March 2023 and was completed by June 2024. The project addressed the challenge of declining wellhead pressure due to field aging by successfully revamping all seven SML Compressors to operate at a lower inlet pressure, thereby sustaining production levels.

PPL emphasized that the increased hydrocarbon production will help bridge the energy demand and supply gap in Pakistan and save significant foreign exchange.

In addition to the developments at Sui, PPL recently announced the start of hydrocarbon production from a new well, Adhi South-8, located in the Pothwar region of Punjab.
