BANGKOK: Alphabet Inc.’s Google revealed plans to invest $1 billion in Thailand to build a new data centre and cloud infrastructure, aimed at meeting the increasing demand for cloud services and fostering artificial intelligence adoption in Southeast Asia.
This significant investment is expected to generate an average of 14,000 jobs annually through 2029, based on a study conducted by Deloitte.
In line with other tech giants, Microsoft also announced earlier this year its intention to establish its first regional data centre in Thailand to strengthen its cloud services in the region.
According to Google, the cloud and data centre infrastructure will be located in Bangkok and Chonburi, addressing the growing need for Google Cloud services and AI innovations. Additionally, it will support the company’s popular services, including Google Search, Maps, and Workspace.
The data centre will be situated in Chonburi’s industrial estate, while the cloud region, comprised of hardware and software for data centre services, will be based in Bangkok.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra praised Google’s investment, noting that it aligns perfectly with Thailand’s Cloud First Policy.
