Ericsson Partners with 12 Telecom Giants to Launch Network Software Venture

STOCKHOLM: Ericsson has announced the formation of a joint venture with twelve major telecom operators, including Verizon, Deutsche Telekom, and Reliance Jio, to market network software solutions. This new venture, in which Ericsson will hold a 50% stake and the telecom companies will collectively own the remaining 50%, aims to revolutionize network applications.

The network application programming interface (API) developed through this venture is designed to enhance various functions such as preventing credit card fraud, ensuring seamless entertainment experiences, boosting gaming speeds, and enabling businesses to deploy a wide range of features across different telecom networks.

In addition to Verizon, Deutsche Telekom, and Reliance Jio, the venture includes América Móvil, AT&T, Airtel, Orange, Singtel, Telefonica, Telstra, T-Mobile, and Vodafone. Vonage and Google Cloud will also contribute by providing access to their extensive developer ecosystems.

Vonage CEO Niklas Heuveldop highlighted the significance of this venture, comparing its impact to the formation of GSMA 30 years ago. Ericsson’s move to invest in network APIs aligns with its previous $6.2 billion acquisition of Vonage, despite facing substantial impairment charges.

The new company aims to simplify the integration of network APIs across global telecom networks, a challenge that has hindered adoption. Deutsche Telekom’s Peter Arbitter emphasized that the venture is poised to drive market growth and that latecomers to the initiative will not be disadvantaged.

With McKinsey projecting that the network API market could generate up to $300 billion in revenue over the next seven years, early adoption by sectors such as banking could capitalize on features like fraud detection.

The venture is supported by a fully funded business plan, including initial and potential Series B funding commitments.
