OGDCL Begins Tight Gas Production from Sindh

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), Pakistan’s largest exploration and production firm, has initiated tight gas production from Nur West Well-1 in Sindh. The company announced this development in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on August 12, 2024.

The notice highlights that OGDCL has commenced early commercial production of tight gas from Nur West Well-1, where it holds a 100% working interest in the Nur Development & Production Lease (D&PL), situated in Sujawal district, Sindh.

Tight gas is natural gas extracted from reservoir rocks with very low permeability, requiring extensive hydraulic fracturing to produce gas economically. These gas reserves are trapped in dense, impermeable rock formations, making extraction complex.

The well is currently producing 1.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas, with a wellhead flowing pressure of 1050 PSI, sourced from the Lower Guru formation. The gas has been integrated into the Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) network, enhancing the national gas supply infrastructure.

Drilled to a depth of 2,975 meters, the well encountered a tight formation, and initial conventional testing methods were ineffective. Hydraulic fracturing was later used to make production feasible.

OGDCL also shared that the company has developed a roadmap for tight gas exploration and development, which is currently being implemented. This effort underscores OGDCL’s dedication to boosting energy resources, meeting national energy demands, and supporting sustainable development in Pakistan.

Earlier this month, OGDCL released additional testing results from the newly discovered Razgir-1 exploratory well in the Kawagarh formation, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kohat district.
