Sindh: The Energy Hub of Pakistan, Says Chief Minister

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has emphasized that Sindh is the energy backbone of Pakistan, capable of producing affordable electricity through its abundant coal reserves in Tharparker and by establishing gas-powered plants similar to the Nooriabad Power Plant.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 19th “My Karachi – Oasis of Harmony” Exhibition at Expo Center, Karachi, he highlighted that the Nooriabad Power Plant generates electricity at Rs15.80 per unit, significantly lower than the Rs48 to Rs52 per unit currently being supplied to industries in Karachi. Shah suggested that if more power plants were established using the province’s gas, the electricity tariff could be reduced by at least 50% within three to five years.

Shah also addressed the issue of Sindh’s natural gas resources, noting that although the province produces 70% of the country’s gas, the industries in Karachi are forced to use imported RLNG, which is more expensive. This has contributed to the high cost of doing business and rising unemployment due to the closure of industries unable to bear the burden of excessive energy tariffs.

Despite these challenges, Shah praised the resilience of Karachi’s business community, which continues to thrive amidst adversity. He affirmed that the Sindh government is investing over Rs200 billion in infrastructure projects in Karachi for 2024-25, including the construction of a water canal from Hub to provide an additional 50 MGD of water to the city.

Shah also spoke about ongoing efforts to tackle street crime in Karachi, which remains a priority given the city’s size and complexity. He urged collaboration for the city’s development, noting that Karachi is crucial not just for Sindh but for the entire country.

In his remarks, Chairman of the Businessmen Group (BMG), Zubair Motiwala, sought the Chief Minister’s assistance in addressing long-standing issues faced by the business community, particularly regarding gas and electricity tariffs. He also highlighted the significance of the My Karachi Exhibition in promoting Karachi’s positive image and the city’s role as a major economic hub.
