First Consignment Shipped as Part of Expanding Trade Relations
KARACHI: On June 5th, Pakistan dispatched its inaugural shipment of fresh cherries to China, facilitated by a refrigerated container. This milestone was achieved under a 2022 phytosanitary agreement between the two countries, which granted Pakistan market access for cherry exports.
Following the agreement, the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and the Department of Plant Protection (DPP) supported orchard owners in registering with the General Administration of Chinese Customs (GACC). The Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Company (PHDEC) played a crucial role in educating farmers on advanced agricultural practices, enhancing the quality and size of cherries, particularly varieties like black and French cherries.
Thanks to these collective efforts, over 100 cherry orchards, along with a cold storage facility and packing house in Rahim Abad, have been registered with GACC. The approval of these facilities expedited the export process, paving the way for this significant trade development.
The National Logistic Cell (NLC) provided the necessary refrigerated containers for the shipment. The logistics costs for the export are being covered by the Export Development Fund (EDF).
