Kohat Cement Company Limited (KOHC) has announced the successful installation and commissioning of a 5.34 MW on-grid solar power plant at its facility in Kohat. The company shared the development in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Wednesday.

This addition complements an already operational 10 MW solar power plant at the same site, enhancing the company’s commitment to adopting renewable energy sources.

KOHC, one of Pakistan’s established cement manufacturers, was founded in 1980 as the State Cement Company of Pakistan. It was privatized in 1992 as part of a broader privatization initiative. The company has since maintained its standing as a key player in the cement industry.

The adoption of solar energy by Kohat Cement aligns with a growing trend among industrial and commercial sectors in Pakistan to transition to renewable energy. Solar energy, being a cost-effective alternative, is becoming increasingly prevalent as companies strive to reduce operational costs and their environmental footprint.

Other major players in Pakistan’s cement sector have also embraced solar power. Last year, Lucky Cement commissioned a 25 MW captive solar power plant in Karachi, while DG Khan Cement installed a 7 MW on-grid solar power plant at its Khairpur site.

This shift towards renewable energy reflects a broader effort by industries to integrate sustainable energy solutions amidst rising energy costs and stagnating electricity consumption in the country.
